Close Call!!

Wow, was that a close one. So there I am sitting at work eating my lunch and I get a text from my wife that she is at the hospital waiting to be evaluated because she thinks she has a kidney stone. Say What??! She tells me that I may need to come in but she'll keep me posted. So I begin to eat rather quickly and then the bell rings. I have to go back to work. So I spend pretty much the next hour with my phone in my hand. Waiting. Waiting.

She texts me back saying that it's not a kidney stone, which I pretty much knew. Nope, they're contractions! Now mind you, she's only at 36 weeks. It's early but the doctors will let her go if it's time. She tells me I may need to come in but she'll let me know.

Ok so I am getting kind of shocked into place now. I get a text saying I should come in. 10 minutes before work ends, at least the teaching side - I still had another 6 plus hours of swim coaching to do - and I walk very quickly around my class room. My students notice something strange going on. I realized that this could be it. So I take a deep breath and think. "I need to call the front office to get someone to come and watch my class." That's what I did.

Now my students know something is up and I tell them to return to their seats and let them know what's up. They cheered. It was kind of sweet. So once the Admin comes to cover class I take off. My wife gave me directions to where she was at the hospital and as I'm going out to my car she calls and fills me in. So off I go. I then realize that I need to figure out if my Assistant Swim Coach can cover for me. It's our League Finals the next three days.

I text my assistant coach and she can cover! Yeah. This will be her first time coaching by herself so naturally I'm a concerned but I trust that she can do it. We end up texting back and forth and everything went alright from her end.

Now I finally pull in to the hospital. Yes I was texting while driving. Shame on me. I know. But shit happens. I get to the hospital with ease and find a sweet parking spot. Go figure. I rush to the building and try to find where to go. After a few wrong turns and some help from a few workers, I find the area I need to go to. It's hidden with a small glass window that is not obvious from the outside so I figured out how to get in and find my wife eventually. She is in an observation room hooked up to the fetal monitors. Her contractions are regular and she looks uncomfortable. Oh boy!!

After several hours of this, the doctor comes in and evaluates her. She says my wife is staying pretty much the same and she'll come back in a couple of hours to see if things progress or not. We're either going to stay and have the baby or be released. So while this is happening her parents both come and we start the process of getting ready if we are indeed going to stay. We haven't packed everything yet so I send an email list to her dad with things we'll need packed just in case. Her parents leave and we'll update them when we know more.

After the first evaluation the doctor tells us we can get get up and walk around if my wife's able to. That was a good idea. It helped. We walked several times around the L & D ward. This was our "tour" that we never had time to officially get. Remember, we aren't due fur another month. We haven't even had the family baby shower yet - only the my wife's work shower. Ahh!!

So after the "tour" we go back to be reevaluated and her contractions are slowing and lessening. We won't need to stay! Hooray, the baby's not coming yet. Now this doesn't mean we are in the clear, it's just that we can go home and get more ready. That's a relief. After we are released, with specific instructions, we go and eat and head home to adequately prepare and pack. It could happen at any time now. I send a note to my work requesting a Sub for the next two days just in case! I also let my assistant coach know what's up and tell her she needs to cover tomorrows meet.

We got home and spent the next couple of hours packing and getting things more ready. I put in the car seat and we loaded the car. We still have some stuff to do around the house but at least we may be able to get more ready, as if it's possible to be "more" ready. We shall see!

It's Raining, it's Showering?

Holy Cow, we got showered! I feel so clean. Now I know from being at my brother's house for their baby shower that it's a good thing to have a lot of friends come because they get a lot of stuff for the baby. But I have to say my wife's friends really stepped it up. Wow! I was simply blown away at the food table. The drinks weren't too bad either.

But seriously, the gifts were really unexpected. I could hear my wife now saying that people won't get the "expensive" stuff from our registry but were we pleasantly surprised. We made out pretty well. We got a lot of towels, bibs, blankets, swim suits, etc.. And oh yeah the new Stroller and Car Seat!! Oh Yeah!!!! And not to mention all of the food. Not too shabby.

And this was the shower thrown by her work friends. We still have the family and friends one coming up. Now I'm not trying to sound greedy but the Glider would go really well in our living room. And it matches the furniture and everything.
